Why Dance Performances Develop Life Skills
A dance performance is usually a school’s goal for that semester or year. It’s what everyone is ultimately working towards and good schools recognize this as an important part of their development as a dancer and a person.
The dance performance is a goal to look forward to, all those dance steps and hours of learning routines would seem very pointless if there wasn’t a goal to work towards. In fact, learning to work to schedule is a very transferable piece of knowledge that all children need to learn, and can then later use in study and work.
All this adds up to discipline, especially when the performance is only a few weeks away. It might even lead to some stress when people realize they haven’t worked hard enough, but all of this is a good learning process, and the stress is usually felt by the teachers not the children.
One word is probably popping into your mind right now- discipline. Discipline is very hard to teach young people, it’s something everyone really needs to learn on their own. That first performance will teach your child a lot about themselves. It will teach them to work to a schedule, whether they should have worked harder and, most of all, the rewards that await them.
Confidence is another thing that can’t be taught. Confidence has to be developed through achievements and participation. Children develop confidence through their own success and the success of the group or team they are with. Confidence is a big part of a child’s personality.
The ability to work with others is a common skill learned through dance. Dance teaches children that they must all pull together as they work towards a performance. This is where very strong friendships are usually built amongst the dance students.
Performances allow your child to interact with family members. It is a great sense of pride for other family members when one of the family is involved in a dance performance. They all try to attend and encourage the family member with their dancing. Family involvement and interaction is the strong foundation of a happy child.
Ultimately, a performance does belong to the dance students. But lots of work goes on behind the scenes and the performance night allows these people to share in the limelight. For kids, it’s always a huge learning experience and something they tend to remember the rest of their life. For the family, it’s a time to support someone they care about, as well as a chance to get together.
